MOVE YOUR FOO!

By Ben McClure

In this project, students will become familiar with simple programming and coding procedures through the online software "The Foos".

The unit is based on the Year 2 curriculum content descriptor ACTDIP004  "Follow, describe and represent a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve simple problems" and supported by the content descriptor ACTDIK001 "Recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose" (ACARA, 2016).

The sequence follows a gradual release of responsibilty model (Killion, 2015) that allows students to observe, engage and finally create their own programs. The links below are for the lesson guide and the "The Foos" website. Enjoy this engaging and entertaining series of lessons based on the Digital Technologies curriculum guidelines, and remember the focus is on how to provide instructions through the use of simple coding methods (as tempting as it is to treat it like a computer game!).

The truly relevant aspect to this sequence is the student-created content- not the tutorial levels. Once the concepts are in place, feel free to take your hands off the wheel and see what the students can achieve- the results will almost certainly amaze!
